Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is a structured group therapy-based service utilizing evidence-based approaches that is effective for the treatment of substance use disorders. Some people will start in IOP, while others will transition from more intense levels of care, such as inpatient or partial hospitalization. Some of the topics/skills addressed in IOP include:
- Identifying warning signs and triggers
- Developing healthy coping strategies
- Relapse prevention
- Understanding and regulating emotions
- Healthy communication and conflict resolution
- Problem-solving
Groups meet multiple times per week in conjunction with individual counseling and other services, such as Psychosocial Rehabilitation, if applicable. Upon completion of IOP, most clients will then continue in less intensive outpatient services as appropriate to ensure continued recovery.
